Public Hearing Set On Davie Hospital Application
The State has scheduled a public hearing on the application of Davie County Hospital/Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center to build a replacement for Davie County Hospital. The hearing will begin at 2 p.m. May 12 at Cornerstone Christian Church, 1585 N. C. Highway 801 north.
Residents of Davie and the adjoining parts of Forsyth and Yadkin counties are invited to speak in support of the application. For information about the hearing, contact Martha Frisone at 919 855-3873.
Davie County Hospital/WFUBMC has held two forums for the community to learn more about plans for the hospital. “We are pleased with the response of the community to the plans for the hospital,” said Donny Lambeth, interim president of North Carolina Baptist Hospital. “We have engaged the community in a dialogue on this project for nearly a year, and there seems to be overwhelming community support for the hospital.”
Under plans submitted to the State for approval, Wake Forest Baptist will build a replacement for Davie County Hospital that would cost approximately $100 million. The four-story building would have approximately 167,000 square-feet. The hospital would have 50 beds, 10 observation beds, two operating rooms, an endoscopy room, a minor procedure room, imaging equipment including CT scanner, X-ray, mammography and ultrasound and a 24-hour emergency room.
The proposed hospital will be located on Hwy 801 at the I-40 Interchange in an area designated for commercial development. Construction has started on re-building the interchange and widening Hwy 801.
The hospital will serve an area whose population is projected to be more than 92,000 by 2010. The population is projected to be 117,500 by 2030. Davie County is the fastest growing county in the Piedmont Triad. Only one other North Carolina county in the population range of Davie does not have a hospital. Currently, Forsyth County has three hospitals, and the State has granted approval for a fourth.
Davie County Hospital will remain open until the new hospital is occupied. The hospital opened in 1956 and is not adequate to meet today’s healthcare needs. Urgent and emergency visits are up 12 percent and admissions 93 percent since Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center began managing Davie County Hospital in 2002.
