Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: This is a confusing process. Why it is necessary that you have three applications on file?

A: We understand that this is a confusing process. We must abide by the rules and regulations of the State of North Carolina to get permission to build a new hospital. We have filed three applications to make every effort to get a replacement for Davie County Hospital.

Q: Why is it necessary that citizens express their support again for the replacement hospital?

A: The State considers each CON separately. Therefore, each of our applications must go through the same process. Each one is on a different timetable.

Q: Excellent community support was demonstrated at both the first and second public hearings. Does that really make a difference?

A: Yes. In its decisions, the State must acknowledge sufficient support for the application. The State recognized the high number of expressions of support and the number of people who spoke at the public hearing last fall. Community support is a component of all applications to the State, and it will be important for us to show the State there is a continuing high level of support for a new Davie Hospital.

Q: Explain the three applications on file and the status of each?

A:

  1. In September 2007, we filed an application for an 81-bed replacement hospital with OB services. The following February (2008), the State rejected the application and listed several areas of concern. We appealed the State’s decision, and the State is considering the appeal and that of Novant, which appealed the State’s denial of its application to build a new hospital in Clemmons. We do not know when the appeal will be decided.
  2. In March 2008, we filed an application for a 50-bed replacement hospital. We addressed the concerns of the State in this application and explained why the eastern Davie County site is an appropriate location for the hospital. We expect a decision on this application in late August.
  3. In July 2008, we filed an application for a replacement hospital with 46 acute care beds and 4 obstetrical beds. The time for public comment is August 1–25, and the State will hold a public hearing in mid-September.

Q: Will the existing Davie County Hospital remain open until the replacement hospital opens?

A: Yes.

Q: What is the status of the primary care center in Mocksville?

A: Wake Forest Baptist Healthcare-Davie will open late this year. The location is on Route 601 between I-40 and downtown Mocksville. Services include urgent care, occupational medicine and physicians offices.

Q: Will my Davie County taxes go up to help pay for this hospital?

A: No. Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is paying for the new hospital and the taxpayers of Davie County have no financial risk in its construction or operation.

Q: What about the loan that the County Board of Commissioners made to Davie County Hospital in 2002?

A: Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center has paid off that loan to Davie County.

Q: How will a new hospital make my life better?

A: The new hospital will offer:

  • More healthcare services closer to where you live so you will not have to travel to Winston-Salem to get the services you need.
  • A convenient, state-of-the-art emergency room that is open 24-hours a day to offer the care you need when you need it, right here in Davie County.
  • More physicians to care for you.
